Nearly one year ago, Little Miss Madeleine came into our world with waving arms and roaring lungs:
She wasn't quite sure of her surroundings; everything was so different, so cold. Especially that intensely bright light that seemed to shine straight through her newborn eyelids. They poked and prodded her to examine her well-being. Apgar was normal, head circumference and length were normal. Her first bath was probably in shocking contrast to the warmth and safety of what my belly must have felt like.
All was healthy, and so little Maddie joined me in my arms for the first time. I tried desperately to feed her, remembering well from my experience with Bella that nursing would be a difficult task. Although she resisted at first, she was a fast learner and picked up on nursing after only a few tries. Skin-on-skin was preferred for optimal bonding between mother and baby so Maddie wore nothing but her diaper when we held her. Her warm, limp body snuggled closely and securely in the crook of my elbow. She fit perfectly!
Those first few nights she slept in my arms as I dozed in and out of consciousness. Feeding was every 2-3 hours so it was better that I had her near rather than in the cold austere baby bin next to the bed. She cooed with contentment after her meals and then drifted peacefully off to sleep as I once again watched in amazement, wondering how this precious little being came to be mine.
