Today I set Bella on the scale in the bathroom to see if she’d broken the 20-pound mark. And sure enough, she weighed in at a whopping 21.5 pounds, which is back up in the 95th percentile for her age. She’s a human trash compactor! She has since graduated from just eating jarred baby-food. Her meals now consist of finger foods like shredded cheese, baby corn puffs, peas, teething crackers, sweet potatoes, and anything else she can get her grubby mitts on.
When she eats with her fingers her facial expressions are so amusing. She’ll grab a morsel of food with one fist and with the other hand, she shoves the entire fist (with food inside) into her little mouth. Her mouth is open so wide that her entire face is stretched out with eyes bulging. Once the food is secure in her mouth, she smiles up at you as she chews her food as if to say, “Hey, this is good. You should try some.” Not that she’d give you any. No sir. In fact, try taking away her food and you will pay a dear price…
Sometimes we have to pace her eating frenzy. If I place more than one piece of food on her tray, she’ll shovel all of it at once into her mouth. Literally, shovel. She sets her open mouth at the edge of the table and then quickly scoops with both hands all of the food towards her mouth. This scene always reminds me of an emaciated, starving prisoner having a meal for the first time in 10 years. Which leaves me wondering, do all babies eat with the voraciousness as our dear Bella?
Yesterday as Jin prepared to give her her bottle of milk, I heard her babble out loud, “Nai-nai”. I couldn’t believe it! She was saying the word we had taught her for milk! “Say it again”, we kept saying. But of course it was too late; she had shoved the bottle into her mouth already. We dismissed this coincidence as a freak occurrence when out of the blue today, she again said, “Nai-Nai”! And there you have it. Bella Girl has uttered her first word. Not “mommy” or “daddy”. But “milk”. I guess we know what her true passions in life are!
