Maddie has been growing before our very eyes. The second she hit her 4 month mark, she went on an all-you-can-eat binge drinking tour with the bottle to feed her exponential growth spurt. Which means, she once again started waking in the middle of the night to feed. When I complained to a friend of mine who also has an infant, she kindly reminded me that Maddie was finally acting like a “normal” baby. It didn’t take long for me to realize what she meant:
Ever since birth, Maddie has been – might I dare say again – an easy baby. I’ve said this in almost every blog entry on her so far, partly because I’m bracing myself for the day when she becomes inconsolable and uncontrollable. And why wouldn’t she? Is it normal that she doesn’t cry or whimper when she’s hungry until I remind her to eat? Could it be strange that she sits quietly watching a Baby Einstein’s DVD put on repeat for more than an hour without making a peep? And is it common that she doesn’t make a sound after getting her blood drawn at the doctor’s office?
Which brings me to my point: Murphy’s Law. Murphy’s Law states that “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”. Or to put it in my terms, “no matter how perfect things appear to be, Mother Nature will bite you in the ass and show you who’s really boss.” Case in point, the second I started to take for granted Maddie’s easy-going demeanor, she started waking up in the middle of the night.
This example helps to define a corollary to Murphy’s Law, which states that “the degree of chaos and destruction is directly proportional to how much you take something for granted.” Therefore (note to self), take nothing for granted and no matter what you do, definitely, definitely do not think about having a third baby…
Maddie turns 5 months today! Happy 5 Months, Maddie! As a treat, we went to the pediatrician’s office for her next round of immunizations (she didn’t make a peep). This past month she’s demonstrated good hand-eye coordination by grasping her toys and shoving them in her mouth. She’s been drooling incessantly which is a prelude to teething. Bella sprouted her first tooth around 4 months so it will be no surprise if Maddie does the same. Although she hates tummy time, she’s holding her head up nicely. In a few months, she’ll be sitting in her own chair! Next month we’ll start solid foods. And then crawling, walking, talking, running…and then my baby won’t be a baby anymore. Boo Hoo! Maybe in a few years we can think about having a third…
