After four days in the hospital, I was cleared to go home. Unfortunately, Bella needed to stay in the hospital because she was beginning to look jaundice. Babies often turn yellow due to the build-up of bilirubin, which is a by-product of the breakdown of red blood cells. Because of their immature livers, they cannot effectively remove bilirubin from their bodies and the build-up causes yellowing of the skin. Doctors serendipitously discovered that the treatment for this is to simply place the baby under UV light. So for the next three days, Bella lived in a UV hood. She loved the warm environment and slept almost throughout the day and night!

"Even though I'm in a hospital, I'm getting my first tanning bed experience!"
