Stranger Anxiety - 5 Month Milestones

at Saturday, January 28, 2006

Bella never ceases to amaze me. She learns new tricks every day. Most recently, she has begun to master passing objects from hand to hand. Her colorful plastic blocks are her new favorite toy of the week. She also enjoys tugging and pulling (e.g., my hair), and pushing and punching (e.g., Jin's face). She stares intently at my mouth when I speak to her and she even grabs my lips as if to say, "Be quiet, Mommy. I don't want to hear it anymore!"

Bella is also learning to express her emotions in the same complex way that adults do. She lets us know when she's angry by furrowing her upper brow and waving her arms and legs. When she's bored she actually sighs and allows her shoulders to sag. And of course when she's happy, she does her signature Bella-song-and-dance routine by smiling and making high-pitched squeaking noises while bouncing her arms and legs in excitement.

She is also beginning to show emotions like love and is building a strong preference for me and Jin. Just the other day we went to lunch with some Friends. One of my friends wanted to try her hand at holding Bella so we figured feeding time with the bottle would be the best opportunity because Bella seems to care less about anything else while eating.

Poor Friend, all she wanted was to love little Bella. The second Bella was passed to her, Bella's face turned South and her lips began to quiver. It was only a matter of seconds before she would explode into tears so my friend quickly averted disaster by passing her back to me. After a few more failed attempts at Pass-the-Baby, Bella finally spotted the frothy milk in the bottle and decided to turn her attention to eating. She reached for the bottle and started to eat so I transferred her to my friend's lap. A few seconds afterwards, with her hands wrapped around the bottle and the bottle hanging from her mouth, Bella looked up to discover she was sitting in a stranger's lap! And, as expected, Bella quickly forgot about the milk and burst into tears.

I suppose the moral of the story is that babies at her age don't like strangers, which is probably a good thing for them to learn from a biological standpoint. But what I learned from the experience is that even at her young age, Bella is able to remember events (especially traumatic events). To this day, when Bella zones off into her feeding frenzy, she will periodically look up towards the feeder as if to check if she's being fed by a mommy-impostor.

Feeding time is becoming my favorite time of the day with Bella. She may be a little human being, but when she's ready to eat, she's a ravenous pig! Lately, we've been mixing her repertoire of food as seen in the previous Green Beans video clip.

When introducing new foods to your baby, you're supposed to keep feeding the same food for a week in case she develops a food allergy. This way, you can be confident that the food allergy was caused by the offending food. However, neither of us, me or Jin, have food allergies so we've abandoned this strategy altogether.

So far, she has developed quite a discriminate palate! And I don't blame her. Has anyone actually tried some of this stuff? Certain flavors like apples or pears are actually quite delightful and have quickly become Bella's favorite. But flavors like grean beans or peas ranks up there in nastiness with dog food or mud (not that I've tried either).
